Debra began doing Reverse Glass Painting about ten years ago. All of Debi's Reverse Glass Painting are done on antique glass. Reverse Painting on Glass comes from the Orient, first done 2000 years ago. Brought to Europe by early explorers, this technique was used for stained glass windows, generally with religious or heroic themes. The style was so popular in England, weathly patrons would have entire collections of canvas paintings copied in the reverse painting style. It reached its zenith during the Industrial Revolution when reverse paintings are used as decorative panels in clocks and mirrors.

The technique is most difficult in that the details are painted in a reverse sequence from a conventional painting. Those details closest to the observer must be painted first--the glint in the eye or the tip of the nose, shading on clothing must be painted before the clothing is painted!

As if the sequence of detail wasn't challenging enough, getting the colors in the painting to show though the glass acurately is another challenge. Remember the glass generally has some inheirent color in it to begin with and a thin layer of varnish must be applied to the glass for the paint to adhere!
